I've been at The Elkhart Truth for a month now and have routinely covered high school sports. In fact, it's been about 90 percent of my assignments. The first week featured a lightning-delayed football game which would have been my warm up to shooting my first college football game, Notre Dame versus Michigan. I know, it was a big one. Trial by fire is what I called it in a blog post I wrote for the Truth's photo blog, Behind the Lens. The post can be read here. September's lesson: How to adapt to a shifting assignment and to a new environment.
This move to northern Indiana is my first time living away from the West Coast and it's different to say the least. But different is what I was looking for. As with most college grads, I'm looking to travel, but I want to explore the United States and hopefully understand its diversity before embarking on international adventures. My first stop in Elkhart and at the Truth is exactly where I wanted to be – a complete and utter surprise with a lively newsroom who look to push the boundaries of newspaper digital storytelling. Jen, Tyler, Sarah, patio, editors alike – thank you for the warm welcome.
Also, isn't "The Truth" the greatest name for a newspaper?
Thanks for looking,
