My second Midwest winter turned out to be easier than my first winter. Temperatures never stayed below 10 degrees and I had far fewer frigid late-night assignments. Michigan's unpredictable weather kept me busy searching for snowy and sweltering photographs. It snowed more during the first 10 days of April than it didn't.
On a slow news Sunday afternoon in March I covered Aveda's "Nature Unleashed presents: Catwalk for Water" fashion show. Stylists and makeup artists from around Michigan competed in three categories: avant-garde, glamour and makeup. The runway show supported Aveda's Earth Month celebration and the Alliance for the Great Lakes.
I never thought I'd be going back to prom, especially eight years after I attended my own. I covered three proms in April and May around Grand Rapids, where I was stationed for five months. The kids dazzled and some of the venues were specular with lights in all the wrong places.
